Sober Is My New Drunk

Just finished reading Sober Is My New Drunk by Paul Carr.  I was not familiar with Paul Carr or any of his other works before seeing this book start showing up on various blogs.  Sober Is My New Drunk is a quick 20-30 minute read, Paul covers most of the issues we will run into when quitting alcohol, questioning if we truly have a problem, STD's, learning to date again and making sober life interesting.  I think this book could help anyone who is trying to quit drinking without AA.

This book would probably not be a good resource if you are using AA to quit drinking.

Updated 3/18 - The Wall Street Journal has a complete write up on the book.

Eminem Discusses his Addiction

"It never once hit me that drug addiction runs in my family. Now that I understand that I'm an addict, I definitely have compassion for my mother. I get it," he says.

Online Support for Quitting Drinking

Quitting anything you enjoy or have enjoyed in the past is hard.  It is important to find support when you embark on the journey of sobriety.   Not everyone wants to go to meetings or into rehab, but talking to others who have the same goal can really improve your chances of quitting.

Two of the best forums  I have found is located at wqd.netwarriors.org and soberrecovery.com.  Go sign up they are friendly and accommodating, if you have other suggestions leave them in the comments.

Alcohol and Damage to Your Body

However, drinking more than three drinks a day has been found to have a direct and damaging effect on the heart. Heavy drinking, particularly over time, can lead to high blood pressure, alcoholic cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure and stroke. Heavy drinking also puts more fat into the circulation of the body.
